San Antonio Urban Ministries, Inc., a private, nonprofit agency was founded
in 1969. It is an ecumenical organization that develops services for the neediest
of our community. Urban Ministries has been a catalyst for establishing programs
that after a period of time of development, become non-profit agencies.
Mission Statement
Meeting youth and mental health needs within our community.
Vision Statement
Aspires to provide social services with the highest standards of excellence.
Value Statement
Delivers quality service with integrity and ethical stewardship.
Over the past three decades, Urban Ministries has grown to a large ecumenical
effort involving
22 churches.
The primary focus is to bridge gaps with ethnic or geographic areas of San Antonio
acting as a midwife for programs designed to meet community needs. Urban Ministries
has nurtured numerous successful organizations such as Ella Austin Community Center,
Youth Alternatives, Presa Community Center, and Community Outreach Programs for
Older People.
Urban Ministries is presently directing its focus on the urban needs of the
new millennium by serving as an umbrella agency for these programs:
- After School Kare (ASK)
provides safe and secure supervision after school hours in the school facility for
1,500 children of working parents. Sites are licensed and staff is trained in all
aspects of child care.
- Fairweather Lodge (FWL)
is a housing and vocational program that enhances the lives of adults who have
mental illness by promoting their self-sufficiency.
- Fairweather Family Lodge (FFL) provides the first facility for homeless women
who suffer from mental illness, and their children.
Urban Ministries has become a vital and versatile expression of human compassion
in San Antonio, building bridges of concern and shared resources to connect communities
which were once alienated from each other. It has also sought to help particular
groups whose unique needs have not been addressed effectively by other agencies.
As congregations of the various backgrounds have become members, the ecumenical
nature of the church's witness has become a reality.
